Top 5 money and energy saving tips

November 7th, 2016

Heating and cooling are the largest energy expense in your home and account for nearly half of your home energy use. With this in mind, we’re sharing our top 5 energy and money saving tips.

  1. Keeping your filters clean and replacing them regularly is the one of the easiest ways to save energy on home cooling. A clogged filter restricts airflow which decreases the unit’s efficiency. Replacing a dirty, clogged filter with a clean one can reduce your air conditioners energy consumption between 5-15%
  2. You can save as much as 10% a year on heating and cooling by simply turning your thermostat back 7°-10°F for 8 hours a day from its normal setting. You could save as much as 1% for each degree if the setback period is eight hours long.
  3. Air loss through ducts accounts for about 30% of a cooling system’s energy consumption. Have your ducts insulated and sealed.
  4. Take advantage of your ceiling fans. During the warmer months, the fan should blow straight down (blades turning counter-clockwise) to help keep the room cool. In the cooler months, the blades should turn clockwise to help draw air up towards the ceiling and force the warm air down.
  5. If you’re ready for a new air conditioning unit, consider buying an ENERGY STAR qualified unit. These models are up to 15% more efficient than standard models. Talk to an expert to make sure you are getting a unit that is the right size for your home and comfort needs.

In total, these changes can help you reduce air conditioning energy use by 20-50% and that’s great news for your energy bill!
